Cabo on a budget — how to save without sacrificing
Cabo has a reputation as an expensive destination — and it can be. But most of what drives up the cost is optional: the wrong season, the wrong hotel location, resort bar drinks, and tour desk excursions. Here's how to have the full Cabo experience for significantly less.

Go in May or October
May has excellent weather and rates 25–35% below peak. October is the hidden gem — hurricane season ending, whale shark season starting, almost no crowds. Both months offer the Cabo experience at a significant discount.
Avoid Spring Break and the holidays
Late February through mid-March and Christmas/New Year's are the most expensive windows. Hotel rates can be 50–70% higher than October for the same room. If you have schedule flexibility, this is the single biggest lever.
Book early for shoulder season
The best value rooms in May and October still fill up — boutique hotels and the most popular Corridor resorts book out weeks ahead. Last-minute shoulder season deals are rare.
Where to Stay
Stay downtown, not on the Corridor
Hotels in downtown Cabo San Lucas run 40–60% less than Corridor resorts. You're a short taxi or Uber from the marina, Médano Beach, and the nightlife strip. The Corridor is beautiful — but if budget matters, downtown delivers the Cabo experience for less.
Consider San José del Cabo
San José is 20 minutes from Cabo's marina by car and has excellent boutique hotels at lower prices. You get the Art District, better restaurants on the budget end, and a more authentic Mexican town experience. Corridor beaches are equidistant.
All-inclusive can be good value for groups
For groups of 4+ traveling together, all-inclusive resorts eliminate the per-drink and per-meal cost spiral. Grand Velas and Breathless offer solid all-inclusive packages that look expensive per room but reasonable per person when food and drinks are factored in.
Food & Drink
Leave the marina strip for meals
The tourist restaurants on Boulevard Marina charge tourist prices. Walk two blocks inland and the same meal costs half as much. The best tacos in Cabo are not in the restaurants closest to the water.
Taco stands are mandatory
Marlin tacos, fish tacos, shrimp tacos — Cabo is a fishing town and the taco stands near the marina reflect that. $2–$4 per taco, made fresh, usually better than anything in a sit-down restaurant.
Resort drinks are the biggest budget killer
A margarita at a resort pool bar can run $18–$25. Bring a small cooler and stock it at the OXXO (Mexican 7-Eleven) — beer is $1.50, wine is available, water is cheap. Save the resort bar for one drink at sunset.
Activities
Water taxi to El Arco: ~$20 round trip
The iconic Cabo experience — a water taxi to Lover's Beach under El Arco — costs about $20 per person round trip. Most resort excursion desks charge 3–4x that for the same boat ride. Book directly at the marina water taxi dock.
Chileno Bay and Santa María Beach are free
The best snorkeling beaches in Los Cabos have free public access. Bring your own gear (or rent for $10–$15 at the beach) and you have an entire day at world-class snorkeling water for almost nothing.
San José Art Walk is free every Thursday
The Thursday Art Walk in San José del Cabo's historic district runs from 5–9pm. Galleries open, artists are present, and there's live music. One of the best evenings you can have in Los Cabos for zero cost.
Todos Santos is a cheap day trip
Gas for the 45-minute drive north is the main cost. Todos Santos itself has cheap local restaurants, free beaches, and art studios. Far more affordable than any resort excursion, and a better cultural experience.
Getting Around
The Corridor bus costs 50 cents
A public bus runs the length of the Tourist Corridor between Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo. It's not air-conditioned and it's slow, but it costs about 50 cents and hits the major Corridor beach access points.
Use InDriver over taxis when possible
InDriver is a bidding-based rideshare app popular in Mexico — often 20–40% cheaper than a local taxi. Uber also operates in Cabo. Always agree on taxi fare before entering the vehicle.
Rent a car for day trips
Day trips to La Paz, Todos Santos, and the East Cape require a car. Weekly rentals from local agencies (not airport counters) run $200–$350 and give you total freedom. Don't pay for resort excursions to places you can drive yourself.

Is Cabo San Lucas expensive?
Cabo San Lucas is one of Mexico's more expensive destinations, but costs vary enormously depending on when you go, where you stay, and how you eat. Luxury resorts on the Tourist Corridor run $400–$1,200/night in peak season. The same resorts drop 30–50% in May, June, and October. Budget travelers who stay in downtown Cabo (not the Corridor), eat at local taquerias, and use public transportation can visit for $80–$120/person per day including accommodation. The resort corridor on spring break is expensive. The same town in October is very manageable.
What is the cheapest time to visit Cabo?
June, July, and August offer the lowest hotel rates — 40–50% below peak season. However, this is also hurricane season. The best budget window is May (good weather, low crowds, rates 25–35% below peak) and October (hurricane season ending, whale shark season starting, excellent value). Avoid December through March and spring break if budget is a concern — these are the most expensive periods by a significant margin.
Are there cheap things to do in Cabo San Lucas?
Yes. The water taxi to Lover's Beach and El Arco costs about $20 round trip and is one of the best experiences in Cabo. Public beaches (Médano, Chileno Bay, Santa María) are free. The San José del Cabo Art District is free to walk and the Thursday Art Walk gallery openings are free. Snorkeling gear rental at Chileno Bay runs $10–$15. The local market in San José has excellent cheap food. Cabo's best sunsets cost nothing.

Food costs in Cabo range from $2–$4 per taco at a street stand to $80–$200/person at El Farallón. Budget travelers eating at local taquerias and markets can eat well for $15–$25/day. Mid-range restaurants on the marina strip run $20–$40/person with drinks. The tourist corridor restaurants and resort dining rooms run $50–$150/person. The key: leave the resort strip. Downtown Cabo and San José's side streets have excellent food at a fraction of resort prices.
