When is the best time to go sportfishing in Cabo San Lucas?
Year-round fishing is possible, but peak season for blue and striped marlin runs June through November. Dorado (mahi-mahi) and yellowfin tuna peak spring through summer. What to watch out for before you hand over cash
Booking directly on the docks can save money — but the independent charter market in Cabo has its share of pitfalls. Know these before you arrive.
Bait-and-Switch Boats
A broker shows you photos of a pristine sportfisher. You arrive at dawn to a cramped, poorly maintained boat with grinding engines and no shade. Always walk down the dock and inspect the physical vessel before any money changes hands.
Missing Safety Gear
Unlicensed operators routinely skip basics: functioning marine radios, proper life jackets, GPS tracking. Ask to see the safety equipment before departure — a legitimate captain will show you without hesitation.
Hidden Fees in "All-Inclusive" Quotes
Live bait, ice, fuel surcharges, fish cleaning, and Mexican fishing licenses are frequently excluded from verbal quotes. Get every inclusion in writing. A legitimate operator will itemize it.
No License, No Permit
Every angler legally needs a Mexican fishing license, and the boat must carry a valid commercial permit. Predatory sellers hide these missing credentials until you're already at sea. Check the permit sticker on the boat before you board.
Protect Yourself
Get a written receipt listing the exact boat name, departure time, and every included amenity before handing over any cash.
Walk down the dock to physically inspect the vessel and meet the actual captain — not just the broker who sold you the trip.
