The Restaurant

Nixtamal tortillas, wild mezcal, and —
Duck Confit with Oaxacan Black Mole.

La Lupita is the gourmet taqueria standard in Los Cabos — two locations, two distinct personalities, and a single shared commitment to treating the taco as a serious culinary vehicle. Both spots operate out of rustic-chic open courtyards that fill nightly with a mix of locals and visitors, backed by live rock and folk bands rotating through the evening. The San José flagship is embedded in the historic Art District and plays heavily into Thursday's gallery Art Walk circuit. The Cabo San Lucas branch runs a higher-energy, later-night atmosphere a few blocks from Médano Beach.

The tortillas are made in-house from nixtamalized corn — the process that distinguishes a serious tortilla from a commodity one. They carry the Duck Confit with Oaxacan Black Mole, the Miso Fish, the Drunken Barbacoa, and the Soft Shell Crab better than anything pre-made could. The mezcal program behind the bar is one of the most comprehensive in the region — dozens of small-batch wild-agave expressions sourced directly from maestros mezcaleros, with guided flights that function as an education as much as a drink order.

What Makes La Lupita Stand Out for Mexican Food in Cabo?

La Lupita is two locations (San José del Cabo and Cabo San Lucas) serving upscale takes on traditional Mexican street food — the Costra de Pastor, al pastor with a crispy cheese crust, is the signature taco that puts this place in a different category from standard tourist-facing Mexican restaurants.

The Menu

Nixtamal tortillas, wild agave — what to order

Pork

Costra de Pastor · Pio Pibil · Drunken Barbacoa

Al Pastor cooked with a crispy cheese crust (Costra de Pastor), pork belly with pumpkin seed sauce (Pio Pibil), and slow-braised Drunken Barbacoa infused with a rich pulque-and-pasilla sauce. The pork program alone justifies the trip.

Seafood

Miso Fish · Chipotle Shrimp · Soft Shell Crab

The Miso Fish Taco is one of the most-copied dishes in Los Cabos — La Lupita's original still leads. Chipotle Shrimp and crispy Soft Shell Crab round out a seafood lineup that outperforms most dedicated seafood restaurants.

Birds

Duck Confit with Oaxacan Black Mole

Duck Confit served on artisan flour tortillas with Oaxacan Black Mole — the most ambitious item on the menu and a consistent standout that signals how seriously the kitchen treats its taco program.

Starters

Guacamole · Wagyu Tostadas · Chorizo Cheese Fondue

Every table starts with fresh-mashed guacamole with pumpkin seeds. The American Wagyu Tostadas and baked Miraflores chorizo cheese fondue are the two appetizers worth ordering before the tacos arrive.

Mezcal

Wild Agave Flights — Espadín · Tobalá · Tepeztate

The back bar holds dozens of small-batch mezcals sourced directly from traditional maestros mezcaleros across Oaxaca and Durango. Guided tasting flights walk through flavor profiles by varietal — one of the best mezcal programs in Los Cabos.

Cocktails

Mezcalitas — Tamarind · Hibiscus · Cucumber-Lime

Beyond neat pours, the bar shakes Mezcalitas infused with fresh tamarind, hibiscus flower, and smoky cucumber-lime blends. The cocktail program is built by people who actually understand mezcal.

Before You Go

Which location, when to book & the Art Walk connection

Both locations are closed on Mondays. The San José flagship opens at noon and is the stronger choice if you're combining dinner with San José's Thursday night Art Walk — the restaurant sits in the heart of the gallery district and the courtyard fills with the gallery crowd. The Cabo San Lucas branch opens at 4 PM and skews slightly younger and louder in the evening. Reservations are strongly recommended at both; live music nights fill the courtyards fast.

Individual gourmet tacos run $4–$8+ USD each — higher than a street stand, well below the resort fine-dining bracket. A full table of two with appetizers, four to six tacos each, mezcal flights, and cocktails typically lands between $80–$130 USD. The quality-to-price ratio is one of the best in Los Cabos at any price point.
